To enable the use of infrared light in organic solar cells and thus increase their efficiency, novel upconversion layers are applied to the solar cells, which convert two infrared photons into one visible photon. In order for the upconversion to function efficiently in solid organic thin films, the sensitizer and emitter molecules involved must be highly ordered. In this research project, different arrangements of sensitizers and emitters are synthesized and optoelectronically characterized with respect to their conversion efficiency. If successful, the concept will be transferred to other solar technologies and to light sources for general illumination.

For SOLID, the research group at LTI collaborates with Prof. Wagenknecht's group at the Institute of Organic Chemistry (OC), which is responsible for the development and synthesis of the materials.
