With the help of various light sources and a variety of optical systems, it is possible today to make light usable in specific situations. This artificial illumination, which makes our present civilization possible to a large extent, and its effect on humans is the subject of lighting technology.

The photometric quantities such as luminous intensity or color describe the human perception of the visible wavelengths of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. Thus, our field of research is based on the one hand on electrical engineering and physics, and on the other hand on human physiology. These two pillars are connected by photometry or light measurement technology.
