  • Laser structuring of materials by tightly focused ultra-short laser pulses for creation of three-dimensional (3D) micro-optical elements, photonic crystals, surface ripples, and new forms of nanomaterials is demonstrated. The mechanisms of the 3D structuring are analyzed and discussed.  Reciprocally, we show how  effects of 3D ordering on a nano/micro-scale can be used to structure and alter properties of light by examples of an optical vortex generation from a laser-trapped liquid crystal droplet and nano-focusing by 3D tailored plasmonic nanoparticles.
